Passkeys

A passkey signs you in with the same unlock that you use on your device, such as a fingerprint, a face scan, or a device PIN. Passkeys are handled by your browser and your device, so the Add a passkey button appears only where your browser supports them.

Add a passkey

To add a passkey, follow these steps:

1. Go to Security.
2. In the Passkeys section, click Add a passkey.
3. In the Name field, enter a name that tells you which device this is, such as Work laptop.
4. Click Add passkey.
5. Confirm with your browser and your device.

The passkey appears in the list with the date it was added and the date it was last used.

Sign in with a passkey

On the sign-in page, click Sign in with a passkey and confirm with your device.

What happens next depends on how the passkey was confirmed:

• If your device verified that it's you, with a fingerprint, a face scan, or a PIN, the passkey counts as both steps and you're signed in.
• If it didn't, and your account has an authenticator app, the Two-step verification page asks for a code.

You can also use a passkey as the second step after your password. On the Two-step verification page, click Use a passkey.

An account that has at least one passkey always asks for a second step after a password sign-in, whether or not an authenticator app is set up.

Rename or remove a passkey

To rename a passkey, follow these steps:

1. Go to Security.
2. In the row of the passkey, click Rename.
3. Enter the new name and click Save name.

The name is only shown to you.

To remove a passkey, follow these steps:

1. Go to Security.
2. In the row of the passkey, click Remove.
3. Enter your current password.
4. Click Remove.

A removed passkey can't sign you in any more. Remove the passkey for a device that you no longer have.
